"I find myself engrossed by The Bomb because it's one of the most
defining elements of modern history. By inventing a means of obliterating
our own existence we forever changed the scale and threat of war as
we know it. It subverted an imbalance of world power to a greater, more
grotesque imbalance. And made real the possibility of an apocalypse;
no longer just some remote biblical allegory. This idea of total annihilation
generated a fear and hysteria that was manipulated to control how people
felt about their neighbors down the street and half way around the world.
Fallout shelters became a home feature. The concept of good verses evil
(where we of course represented good) was no longer an idea, but a very
real working hypothesis from which the government maneuvered mass sentiments,
tried innocent people, and undemocratically pursued "enemies of the
state"... and we're still using the threat of nuclear weapons today
to galvanize support for nonsensical wars.
As an artists though, I'm not only consumed by the culture it created,
but also by the thing itself. It's both horrifying and mesmerizing to
behold. It's as horrendous and terrifying as it is beautiful. That something
so gruesome can be such a thing of wonder and magnificence is the thing
I just can't get over."
